In Japan..........which is a xenophobic society in itself.............Jews are hated, unfortunately.

Much like in China, very few Japanese have ever met a Jewish person, but the hate runs deep. It might have something to do with being an ally of the Nazis.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3523041.post-87240116669644270442011-01-24T14:28:56.926-05:002011-01-24T14:28:56.926-05:00I teach English as a Second Language and American ...I teach English as a Second Language and American cultural studies in WA State to mostly Japanese, Korean, and Chinese students and consistently encounter the kinds of stereotypes of Jews mentioned in the article and in Mr. Rosenthal's post. The level of ignorance of Jews and Jewish culture, not to mention the history of anti-Semitism, is understandable but appalling. The fact that these stereotypes are "positive" among the Chinese does not lessen the possibility that when fortunes shift--and we all know they will shift someday soon in China--those same stereotypes will become negative.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3523041.post-92215597122987089982010-02-19T02:14:55.004-05:002010-02-19T02:14:55.004-05:00The Chinese were always knows as the "Jews of...The Chinese were always knows as the "Jews of the East", and indeed in Southeast Asia they fulfilled the same role for centuries as small merchants, as doctors, and as skilled craftsmen living as a minority in a Muslim world. And yes, Jews have a very positive image with the Chinese.

I am however always amazed at the association between financiers and Jews. I know that this comes from the middle ages, but the reality just does not square with the myth. There are certain professions such as medicine, academics, or perhaps law, where Jews might have a stronger bias in their representation. Its ignorance at a level that will likely take generations in order to disspell the myths that they believe in.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3523041.post-70593916042237710182007-02-24T22:10:00.000-05:002007-02-24T22:10:00.000-05:00That was an interesting article.I wonder if the bo...That was an interesting article.
I wonder if the book by R' Lapin is sold there: "Thou Shall Prosper: Ten Commandments for Making Money."

"I felt this great warmth when I visited in 1991 as a professor of Jewish Studies.
