I believe that the true wonder of the discipline is how it reveals the complexity and diversity of the underlying culture, its adaptibility, and the evolution of its thought processes. What comes to mind is Richard Freund, the archeologist from NYU, and his work on the Temple and the Dead Sea Scrolls - specifically his Nova series on the Ancient Refuge in the Holy Land.
